Where windsurfing started in Italy!

Here, in the Val di Sogno Bay at Malcesine, in the Stickl sport camp, the sport of wind surfing was introduced to Italy in the summer of 1976. The Val di Sogno Bay is recognized as the best spot for beginners on Lake Garda. In Torbole the surfing fun for kids and beginners is put to an end, after just a few hours, by unfavourable, gusty and off shore winds: the famous ORA with wind strengths of 4-5 will reduce them to on-shore watchers. Our “beginners”, by contrast, can be seen surfing even in the afternoon some extra FREE hours with the entire rental equipment.

Also, kids aged 7 and over will feel more confident in the sheltered bay than out on the open water, and surfing instructors are able to hold their classes in a considerably securer and more efficient way. The equipment, boards, sails, neoprene suit and swimming vests are adjusted to children aged 7-12.
Advanced classes and fun board beginners are instructed either during the strong morning “Vento” off the secluded bay, or at the opposite side of the lake, at Campione, under the “Ora” in the afternoon. Students and boards will be taken to the starting place with the service boat.
Your advantage: At the place where we start, we are undisturbed. There is neither board hassle nor lack of space at the shore. Video monitoring and step-by-step training in well-structured course programs, with units that naturally build on each other, have characterized our concept for 25 years now.
Equipped with short boards and small sails, neoprene suits and swimming vests, and divided into two course groups, our kids will sail through the bay after just a couple of hours. The instructor is always at the waterside, and naturally a lifeboat is available for emergencies. Daily 2,5 hours water training and theory tutorials are on the course agenda from Monday to Friday. A written exam to acquire the VDWS  junior certificate as well as a fun regatta will complete the surfing week. With everyone making fast progress, this will be great fun for the children and teachers alike.

Beginners class

Nowhere else at Lake Garda you will find better conditions for surfing beginners. No waves in the secluded bay and, until noon, there will be a mild offshore wind. Following the change of wind, there will be Ora: a mild breeze at the beginning, which then continues to intensify to wind strengths of 3-4. Anyone will be able to jump onto the board during these hours. On the new ultra broad boards by STARBOARD, and supported by our committed team of instructors – some looking back to over 10 years experience in the sports camp – surfing students will achieve a considerably higher level than on the former boards – after as little as 12 hours.
The complete equipment will be provided and will be available for FREE even after the class has finished.

Advanced class and funboard

For accomplished surfers Malcesine is not the ideal choice. They will find better conditions at Torbole, where the Ora with wind strenghts of 4-6 guarantees gliding sensations. In Malcesine only those who get up very early will be able to experience this feeling. Blowing from 6 am, often until noon, only the morning Vento will outdo the Ora in strength and wave swell. After the obligatory calm accompanying the wind change around noon, it will become quiet in Malcesine. Only all round surfers on sword boards will then find sufficient wind conditions at wind strengths of 2,5-3.5 Beaufort, or surfers with formula boards with a sail size of up to 10 square metres. They, too, will be able to glide under those wind strengths. We will structure the classes for fun board surfers accordingly, allowing them to take advantage of the best wind conditions.
Training unit 1: In the morning under the “Vento” the service boat will take participants out of the bay to the offshore island. Without being disturbed by other surfers we can then run our individually designed classes for fun board surfers using video monitoring.
Training unit 2: In the afternoon, under the “Ora”, the service boat will take a maximum of 5 surfers to Campione at the opposite side of the lake. This is in case the “Ora” does not provide sufficient wind in the bay even for formula boards and huge sails. At Campione, the “Ora” should intensify by at least one wind strength.
Off you go with the service boat to the fun board spot! We offer this service for class participants and those renting boards as well as for guests of the sport hotel Villa Orizzonte.
